Booking your first curly hair appointment, or feeling unsure about what to bring and ask? This guide helps new clients prepare for a relaxed conversation about their hair, routine and preferred shape.

You do not need to arrive with perfect curls or a complete product routine. A useful first appointment starts with clear information: how you normally wear your hair, what you like or dislike about its shape, your usual wash and styling routine, and what you can manage day to day. Bring a few reference images, including a photo of your own hair on a typical good day. Explain that inspiration images show a goal, not a guaranteed match.

Share relevant history such as colour, bleach, relaxers, heat styling, protective styles, recent changes and sensitivities. If your hair is usually stretched or styled, ask the salon whether to arrive that way or in its natural state. Strand & Lock’s existing service describes a dry consultation; check current preparation instructions when booking rather than making assumptions.

Prepare questions: What shape is realistic? How much length might be removed? How will shrinkage be considered? What will the cut look like when styled at home? What aftercare is optional, and what is essential? Tell the stylist if you feel discomfort or want to pause. A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment to every suggested service.

If you have a scalp condition, unexplained hair loss or an active reaction to a product, seek appropriate clinical guidance and tell the salon before proceeding. Dermatologists recommend gentle handling of curly hair and conditioning across its length. AAD curly hair guidance
